Local Bookstores for Summer Reading

August 14, 2018

We get it—it’s hot! The temptation is probably really strong right about now to flop onto your couch at your Chestnut Square apartment, flip on the TV and enjoy the comfort of your air conditioning! That’s all well and good, but at some point, your summer leisure time should actually have you enjoying the great outdoors!

Even if baking on the beach isn’t your thing and if you’re not into the crowds and costs of the water park, you can still stretch your legs and get some fresh air and relaxation. What better way to recharge your batteries than with a good book? Whether you’re hiding out on the beach under an umbrella or kicking back in a local park, losing yourself inside the pages of a book can help you push the reset the button and make the most out of the lazy days of summer.

Here are a few local spots where you can get your hands on everything from classics to the latest best sellers:

Second Reading Bookstore: Three blocks from your Chestnut Square apartment, Second Reading is a perfect spot to score great deals on summer reading. Gently used reading materials abound, from fiction to fantasy and everything in between. Get most books for under $4, or opt to fill a bag for $14. Even if you’re on a budget this summer, you can get loads of like-new items at half (or more!) of the price at Second Reading.

Baldwin’s Book Barn: Two miles from your Chestnut Square apartment, Baldwin’s is a treasure for book lovers. The business has been opened for 84 years, and been in its current location for more than 70! The building itself is a perfect setting for a book shop, featuring several floors of cozy nooks, comfy chairs and hundreds and hundreds of shelves of rare, antique and used books—all housed in an early 19th-century, five-story house. More than 30,000 items in all—including artwork, antiques, collectibles and more—line the walls of Baldwin’s, where you can easily lose half a day selecting the perfect summer reading material and more.

Salvation Army Thrift Store: If you want to get more for your money, check out the book selection at Salvation Army Thrift Store, two blocks from your Chestnut Square apartment. The resale shop sells gently used items, including a wide range of books. When you’re all done, donate them back to the store to keep the giving going!
