Giving Back this Thanksgiving Season
November 6, 2018The Thanksgiving season is upon us! For many, that means turkey, stuffing and all the fixings! While many celebrate the holiday indulging, surrounded by family and friends—and, of course, playing some football—Thanksgiving can be challenging for those who are struggling. Far too many families are grappling with job losses, medical conditions and other challenges that make it hard to put food on the table year-round, let alone during this holiday season. Poverty unfortunately strikes people everywhere, including here in West Chester near your Chestnut Square apartment. However, those whose plates are overflowing can embrace the spirit of Thanksgiving this year by giving back to those in need.
Among the local organizations striving to lend a helping hand to those who are struggling is the West Chester Food Cupboard. Located six blocks from your Chestnut Square apartment, the organization provides fresh and non-perishable food items to West Chester residents in need, operating under the motto “No one should go hungry.” Those who meet income requirements need only stop into the food cupboard once a month to receive a stock of free food for all members of their family.
How can you help this worthy cause? There are three easy ways!
The West Chester Food Cupboard could use financial donations. The organization’s volunteers purchase the fresh food it distributes each week so monetary contributions can go a long way toward expanding the center’s budget and food supply, and thus helping it feed even more clients. The cupboard also distributes donated goods, and locals are encouraged to gift unopened, nonperishable food items (canned goods, salad dressing, granola bars, etc.) and personal-care items such as cleaning and paper products. The organization can also always use a few more friendly faces around the cupboard itself, to help sort and package items.
