Here’s How to Support Local Communities this MLK DayJanuary 15, 2021
Every year, millions around the country come together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a day a service to the community in honor of the life and work of one of the country’s foremost civil rights icons. In 2021, given the ongoing pandemic, the community service projects held on MLK Day will certainly look and feel a bit different—but that doesn’t mean they’re any less important. There are still many worthwhile projects right near your Chestnut Square apartment—and some that you can do right from home!—so you can safely give back to those in need.
One such cause is the Safe Harbor of Chester County. Located less than one block from your Chestnut Square apartment, the organization provides housing and supportive services for those battling homelessness in the Chester County area. While the nonprofit isn’t hosting a specific volunteer event on MLK Day, its work is largely powered by volunteers year-round—so you can schedule your volunteer time to coincide with the holiday or pick another day to give back!
There are many ways to contribute your time and service at Safe Harbor of Chester County. The organization provides meal delivery and on-site food services, so you can work in the kitchen to prepare or bag meals, serve meals at the shelter or deliver food to the local community. The organization is also always in need of donations. If you have canned goods and other non-perishable food items you can part with, box them up and bring them to the shelter for your community service project. Safe Harbor also provides free clothing and accessories to all residents, so you can do some winter cleaning and organizing to clear out your closets and help those in need.
This Martin Luther King Day, take the opportunity to check out this or other local volunteer events—every act, no matter how small, can give back to the community in a big way!
