‘Tis the Season for Giving
December 4, 2017
The holidays are upon us, and while tearing open presents to find new clothes and electronics can brighten anyone’s day, helping other people share that joy may be just as exciting. Philadelphia is home to thousands of families in need, and thankfully a number of organizations, including several right near your Chestnut Square apartment, have sprung into action to help make their holidays a bit more magical. Here are just a few ways you can give back to your community (and give yourself something to be proud of this holiday!).
Safe Harbor of Chester County: Located less than a block from your Chestnut Square apartment, you barely have to leave home to help out! The organization provides vital support, such as food and housing, to those experiencing homelessness. Volunteers are key to the organization’s work and assist with everything from maintaining the shelter to preparing and serving meals, resources that are becoming even more important as the winter weather is upon us.
United Way of Chester County: The nonprofit, with a location just two blocks from your Chestnut Square apartment, supports more than 60 social-services organization in the area. Apart from accepting donations to help fund its work, the organization offers resources for volunteer and giving opportunities at the many local organizations it funds.
Chester County Food Bank: The organization, whose headquarters is located about 10 miles from your Chestnut Square apartment, operates food banks all across the region to assist those facing food insecurity. Apart from making donations to help with overhead, the agency encourages supporters to host their own food drives. Get together a group of friends or neighbors and collect non-perishable items like canned vegetables, cereal and pasta.
