How to Get Involved on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

January 12, 2018

Every year, people around the nation roll up their sleeves and lend a helping hand to their local community in the name of iconic civil-rights figure Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. While volunteers in all four corners of the country pitch in for a day of community service, the Philadelphia region actually hosts the biggest Martin Luther King Day service project in the nation, with many of the efforts right near your Chestnut Square apartment.

Organized by Global Citizen, local MLK programming offers hundreds of ways to give back to the area, from community clean-ups to beautification projects to educational events. So pick your project, grab your friends and head out to make a difference in your community on Jan. 15:

West Chester YMCA: Craft aficionados and newbies are both welcome to try their hands at making fleece blankets and pillows at the West Chester YMCA, about two miles from your Chestnut Square apartment. The completed items will be donated to the Home of the Sparrow, which serves single women and mothers in crisis.

Safe Harbor of Chester County: Honor King’s legacy by volunteering for the day at Safe Harbor, one block from your Chestnut Square apartment. The agency provides comprehensive resources for those experiencing homelessness, including shelter, food and assistance with employment and permanent housing.

Family Service of Chester County: Just two blocks from your Chestnut Square apartment, Family Service of Chester County has many opportunities to give back on MLK Day. The organization provides a range of services to the local community, from counseling to resources for those with HIV/AIDS to social outlets for seniors. On Jan. 15, pitch in driving HIV/AIDS patients to appointments, providing one-on-one counseling to young people or sort donations that will ultimately go to families in need.
