Where to Picnic in West Chester This Summer

July 18, 2019

Despite the warm weather, the hustle and bustle of city living hasn’t slowed. However, the end of the summer will be here before we know it, which means we should pump the brakes on our busy lives and get out and about to enjoy the sunshine! Luckily, there are lots of ways to do that near your Chestnut Square apartment: rooftop bars, summer festivals and plenty of opportunities for outdoor exercise. If you’re trying to keep it simple (and free), break out the picnic basket and grab some grub, a blanket and your favorite people and head to your nearest green space for a day of soaking up rays with some good food and company.

One of the most unique places to picnic in our area is Marshall Square Park, where you can get a taste of nature right alongside history. The park, three blocks from your Chestnut Square apartment, dates to the 1800s, when it served as an arboretum, with a number of the rare trees and plants that flourish today planted at the park during this time. It officially became a public park in the 1870s, and much of its original charm has been retained over the years. For instance, visitors today can see the original fountain that stood in the park, which was found just several years ago and expertly restored and reinstalled. The park also houses a monument to local soldiers who served in the Civil War.

While park goers can certainly learn something when they visit, those looking to just chill out in the sun can find plenty of space to do that. Roll out your blanket or get cozy at the picnic tables to chow down on lunch with your sweetheart or group of friends and then explore the wide open green spaces, perfect for sunbathers or a pick-up sports game. The towering, historic trees at Marshall Square Park also provide ample shade for when you need a break from the summer sun.

So lather on the sunscreen, grab your shades and head to Marshall Square Park to chill out before summer heads out of West Chester!
